The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently issued its “Causes of Death Australia 2021” report, which found there were 171,469 deaths registered in Australia in 2021, up 10,169 from the previous year.
The five leading causes of death were:
1. Ischaemic heart disease - damage or disease in the heart’s major blood vessels.
2. Dementia, including Alzheimer's.
3. Cerebrovascular diseases - conditions that affect blood flow in the brain.
4. Malignant neoplasm of trachea, bronchus, and lung cancer.
5. Chronic lower respiratory diseases - including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
There were 1,122 deaths due to COVID-19 registered in 2021, most of which occurred during the Delta wave of the pandemic, which began in mid-2021.
Men are more likely to die from risky behaviour compared to women. Three men died from falling out of a tree, five men died from animal attacks (dogs not included), and 21 men died from falling out of a moving boat and drowning.
