Flooding Rains and Our Local Wildlife
Flooding Rains and Our Local Wildlife
We have certainly been very fortunate in the Yass Valley to have escaped the devastating floods that have wreaked havoc on the NSW mid-north coast as well as other areas of the state. However, raised water levels in our rivers and creeks can mean trouble for many animals, including our local wombats and tortoises.
Wombat burrows can be prone to flooding particularly if they are located on the banks of rivers. The Wombat Protection Society of Australia recommends that if you find a wombat under the house, on your veranda, in the garage or shed, or sheltering under machinery just be patient and give them a chance to dry out. As soon as it stops raining, and their burrows drain, they will move on. If possible, leave them alone as they will be frightened and confused, so keep dogs well away. If further advice is needed, contact can be made through www.wombatprotection.org.au/rescue-contacts
In terms of tortoises, floods can displace them from their homes, so you may see more tortoises on the move and on roadways in particular. Take extra care on the roads not to run over tortoises. If you see a tortoise on the road lying on its back, legs paddling in the air, pull your vehicle over into a safe siding and then walk back to the tortoise. Pick the tortoise up and remove it from the road. Place it right side up and point it in the direction it was going (the last thing you want is for the tortoise to wander back onto the road).
If you see wildlife struggling as a result of the heavy rains, please call WIRES on 1300 094 737 for rescue help and advice.
