How to Walk Tall, Even When Your Data Has been Hacked

We recently learned that cybercriminals have stolen 9.7 million records from five million Medibank customers, and are demanding ransom from the company.
These customers will be concerned that the criminals have acquired personal details like addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and bank account numbers. They will also be concerned that the criminals now have details about their medical history.
Medibank, the Australian Federal Police, and the Federal Government are keeping close watch on the situation, and it is likely that the attack on Medibank will result in tighter cybersecurity measures and enhanced penalties for cybercriminals.
But what does this mean now for Medibank customers whose data has been stolen?
If you are feeling anxious about the situation, go to your GP as your first port of call. Beyond Blue has several tools that are freely available, including their “Anxiety and Depression Checklist” and NewAccess, a mental health coaching program. NewAccess has been developed by Beyond Blue and delivered by mental health service providers. You can learn more here: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/newaccess-mental-health-coaching
It can also help to identify things within your control. You can change your bank account passwords so that cyber criminals can’t access your funds. You can block calls and texts from unknown numbers on your mobile phone. You can obtain good virus protection software for your computer. You can let your bank know that you have been hacked, and ask them to be vigilant about suspicious activity such as fraudulent purchases.
