Yass residents from the 1980s will no doubt remember Gary Sutton, who was a policeman stationed in Yass as the Lock-Up Keeper. Gary explains, “My family and I resided in the residence adjacent to the station, and along with normal shifts, I attended to the after-hours call outs, managed the prisoners staying overnight in the attached cell complex.”
“I have to say those after-hours call outs to motor vehicle accidents on the old Hume Highway were challenging to say the least. I was fortunate to work with a terrific team of blokes as well as a magnificent volunteer rescue squad” Gary said.
Gary took and pride in the garden, and even won third place in the Yass gardening competition, which he says, with a chuckle, was the highlight of his career.
Though Gary is now retired and lives in Tweed Heads, he remembers Yass fondly and says that he and his family “made some wonderful friends in your lovely part of the world”.
