Annemarie Doyle is the brainchild behind a popular street library, located at 106 Rossi Street, Yass.
Street libraries are a fairly new phenomena, and involve individuals and families providing a home for books in their front yard. The libraries are accessible from the street, and the idea is that books come and go from the libraries; no-one needs to check them in or out. People can simply reach in and take what interests them, and when they are done, they can return them to the street library, or pass them on to friends.
Annemarie was inspired to create the street library after seeing a segment about them on Gardening Australia. Annemarie explains, “I loved the idea. I have had a passion for reading throughout my life. It is such a joy and it is uplifting and inspiring. Reading opens up the world and broadens the mind.”
A wide range of people frequent the street library from small, excited children to teenagers, adults and fellow seniors. Fiction has been the most popular genre and children's books have flown off the shelves. Annemarie says that “It has been so lovely to hear children squealing in delight on finding a book they want”.
Annemarie says that the feedback from the community has been wonderful. “It has also been a wonderful opportunity to meet many fabulous people. I have found the Yass community extremely welcoming, generous and kind. In fact, my move to Yass has been the best move I have ever made” she said.
