There have been a number of recent posts on Yass social media from dog owners frantic to find their lost dogs.
Quite apart from making sure your property is securely fenced and people know protocols around shutting doors and gates, it is sadly a fact that dogs are prone to go missing particularly during thunderstorms and events where loud noises are prominent (fireworks, etc.).
It is recommended that you search your neighbourhood immediately that you notice your dog’s disappearance. Be sure to take your dog’s favourite snacks with you to help lure them to you. While you are out searching, tell everyone you meet about your missing dog. Show them a picture of your dog on your phone and hand out your phone number so that they can call you if they spot him/her. Call your microchip provider and alert them that your dog is missing. Call local vets and alert them also.
Create flyers to post everywhere. Include an up-to-date picture of your dog and put your contact information, description of collar colour, date missing and any useful information (like “Needs meds,” or “Scared, do not approach”). Don’t forget to outline a reward if you are offering one.
Contact the Yass Valley Area Animal Shelter on 02 62261477. Drive there and leave some flyers, that way, if your dog comes through, they will know they have a home. We recommend repeated visits to the Animal Shelter. Shelter and pound facilities are only required to hold stray animals for eight days, and will make every effort to find a pet’s owner during this time. However, if no one comes forward, after this time you risk losing ownership of your pet as facilities can choose to rehome them after the eight day period.
Don’t forget how powerful social media is. Post your flyer on your page (don’t forget to put your location) and ask people to share. Contact local dog groups and ask them if they will post it on their Facebook page. You can also place a notice under the ‘Lost and Found’ section of a local newspaper. Some local radio stations will also make announcements about lost pets.
Losing a beloved dog is very upsetting and stressful. Please look after yourself during this time and reach out for support as required.
