Most NSW Local Council Elections Postponed

On Saturday 24th July 2021 the NSW Government announced its decision to postpone the election day for the majority of local councils. Instead of being held on 4th September 2021, the election is now to be held on the 4th December 2021. It is likely that this decision was made because of the current COVID-19 situation.

By way of background, there are 128 local government councils in NSW. Each council represents a local government area. 125 councils will be holding elections on Saturday, 4th December 2021 for the election of councillors. Some councils will also be holding mayoral elections, constitutional referendums and/or polls.

The councils that will not be holding elections on the 4th December 2021 are:

• Balranald Shire Council (not having an election)
• Central Coast Council (holding a referendum only)
• Central Darling Shire Council (not having an election)
• Fairfield City Council
• Penrith City Council.

Fairfield City Council, Penrith City Council and Central Coast Council have engaged an electoral services provider to administer their elections and referendum.
