It is well-established that sustainable social connection is a key to ending loneliness and increasing greater wellbeing outcomes. Our neighbours provide us with this social connection, whether it be a simple “g’day” over the fence, bringing our bins in off the street when we’re not at home, checking in on us when we are unwell, or organising an annual street party. Neighbour Day, which is an initiative of Relationships Australia, aims to encourage and further enhance sustainable connections between individuals and communities.
Relationships Australia holds a “Tell Us Your Story” competition each year to gather stories about great neighbourhoods. This year’s winner was Michelle from NSW, who wrote about men in her street making a pact to mow their lawns wearing costumes throughout 2020 (memorable costumes included Minnie Mouse, Scooby-Doo, a hot dog, and a koala). This was then followed by driveway drinks – socially distanced drinks held on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, accompanied by conversations launched across the street. Michelle explained that “As tough as last year was, we have really gotten to know our neighbours much better, and feel like we can call on them anytime if we need. And the memories of those mowing days bring a smile to our faces.”
The Yass Valley is well known for its fantastic neighbours, in fact just last week the following account was posted on the Yass Notice Board on Facebook:
Leah Moran spoke about her son who was injured following a nasty scooter accident outside Berinba School, and the help he received from a wonderful lady. “Thank you so much for helping my son back to the office,” Leah said, “He was pretty messed up with lots of multiple lacerations, grazes and bruising, asphalt burns, but he hit his head and became very disoriented not long after you got him back to the office. So a huge thank you…You made sure he was safe and had help... I can’t thank you enough”.
This is just one story of neighbourly kindness, but we know there are many, many others. If you have a good neighbour story to share, or are planning a special activity to mark Neighbour Day on the 28th March 2021, we want to hear about it!
