Last Wednesday was “Thank a First Responder Day”, with events designed to connect first responders and thank them for the vital work they do for our communities taking place all over Australia.
Here in Yass, approximately 60 first responders and their families turned up for a breakfast provided by “Two Little Pigs”. The event was principally attended by Fire and Rescue personnel, paramedics, police officers and members of Binalong’s Volunteer Rescue Association. By all accounts, it was a successful event, with participants saying they enjoyed getting to know others outside the job. The Soldier’s War Memorial was also lit up in teal at night to acknowledge the role that our first responders play and their contribution to our community.
Yass Fire and Rescue has a strong tradition of service, and there are now opportunities to join the team as an on-call firefighter. On-call firefighters are a diverse group of men and women who balance other work, study and family commitments, but enjoy being part of a team and working with people and other emergency services. Applications are accepted from people aged 17 years and over and are assessed on merit and physical aptitude. Once successful, new firefighters receive two weeks training plus ongoing mentoring and support.
