Last week it was announced that urgent upgrades at the Yass Water Treatment Plant and upgrades to the Raw Water Pump Station have commenced.

This is the first stage of a three-stage project to better manage the consistency of quality drinking water, and is being funded by a $2.543 million grant from the NSW Government’s Housing Acceleration Fund.

Stage one includes installing bubble plume aeration at Yass Dam, upgrading the raw water pump station and completing urgent works at the treatment plant.

Yass Valley Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Assets, James Dugdell, said these works will reduce the number of days residents experience water discolouration and/or water with a noticeable odour.

“Stage one will enable Council to manage the treatment process more closely by controlling the rate at which water is processed through the treatment plant,” Mr Dugdell said. “It will also assist with providing a more consistent quality of raw water to the treatment plant during periods of low rain.”

Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman welcomed the announcement, saying “I am delighted to finally mark the milestone of the Yass Water Treatment upgrade beginning and share the community’s anticipation in seeing the project progress to consistently high-quality water.”.

Procurement of long, lead-time items began in October 2021 and construction was due to conclude in January 2022. However, the delivery of materials and securing contractors were delayed by COVID-19. Stage one is now due to be completed by June 2022.

During construction, contractors will remove and refurbish both pumps at the Yass Raw Water Pump Station, one at a time, leaving no back-up pump.

Council advises that in the highly unlikely event the remaining pump fails, the town will be placed on immediate water restrictions. This will be communicated through local media and on Council’s website and Facebook page
