Take a Green and Gold Drive in Wiradjur Country

If you’re looking for an enjoyable activity this weekend, look no further than our own backyard – Wiradjuri country.

We took a round trip to Boorowa, Harden Murrumburrah, and Jugiong before heading home, and were blown away by fields cloaked in golden canola. These were interspersed with emerald fields of wheat and paddocks boasting fat, contented sheep and cattle.

We recommend the following:
From the Hume Highway, take a right turn to the Lachlan Valley Way, and continue driving until you reach Boorowa. A stop in historical Boorowa is recommended. You can pick up a coffee from Arnold’s Coffee Van or the Marsden Street General Store both situated in Marsden Street then take a stroll past the ANZAC Memorial Clock to reach the Boorowa River. A walk along the H.E.A Dunk Memorial Path is sure to bring delight, and who knows, you might even spot a platypus or two.

Leaving Boorowa the way you came, you will soon reach Cunningar Road leading to Harden Murrumburrah. Follow the road to see the most spectacular canola and wheat fields. Marvel at the golden canola near the Goorama Road and Barwang Creek, and don’t forget to stop safely and take a photo or two. Continue on Cunningar Road until you reach the turn off to Harden Murrumburrah. A stop here is also recommended.

When we go to Harden Murrumburrah, we like to have lunch at The Barnes Store Emporium and Café, or Whichcraft Coffee Cottage, both of which are located on Albury Street. The Emporium and the Cottage not only serve delicious meals, but also give the visitor insight into the produce of the area. The Emporium retails the most delicious condiments, and the Cottage contains the most wonderful locally-produced arts and crafts, which are all available for sale.

To get to Jugiong, you will need to double back a couple of kilometres on Albury Street until you come to the Jugiong Road. The drive to Jugiong is green and lush and mainly peppered with gentle green hills. Jugiong has become a popular spot in the last few years, with the opening of The Long Track Pantry and a revitalisation of the St George Inn. Jugiong is best known for the flood of 1852 which almost wiped out the small settlement, along with the death in 1864 of Police Sergeant Edmund Parry at the hands of the Hall bushranging gang. Thankfully things are less dramatic these days.
